I think it's so rejuvenating to know that you are using wordpress to do something so neccessary... educate. I enjoyed the article about children at play as well as the youtube video regarding how insanely we are investing in technology only to be considered obsolete by it. This world has some distorted views and values but it's refreshing to know there are good people still left in the world. Please take a moment to view www.timetowakeup.wordpress.com I know all of you will enjoy it.
Thank you, Samurai.

Marriner S. Eccles, was the Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1934 1948

In his 1951 memoir Beckoning Frontiers, Eccles detailed what he believed caused the Great Depression.
Our current situation is eerily similar.

Eccles wrote:

"As mass production has to be accompanied by mass consumption, mass consumption, in turn, implies a distribution of wealth — not of existing wealth, but of wealth as it is currently produced — to provide men with buying power equal to the amount of goods and services offered by the nations economic machinery.

Instead of achieving that kind of distribution, a giant suction pump had by 1929-30 drawn into a few hands an increasing portion of currently produced wealth. This served them as capital accumulations. But by taking purchasing power out of the hands of mass consumers, the savers denied to themselves the kind of effective demand for their products that would justify a reinvestment of their capital accumulations in new plants. In consequence, as in a poker game where the chips were concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, the other fellows could stay in the game only by borrowing. When their credit ran out, the game stopped.

Hi Jake,

Much thanks! I think at the Jr. High or early H.S. level, a clear overview helps fill in a lot of gaps that students might have, prior to diving in to the material.

I really like the overview slide. It is short and sweet and gets right down to the the interesting events that happened in that that particular time period. I also really like like the second slide that is dealing with the depression. Well done.

Hi Sue,

Thank you very much! You are most welcome to come in and observe a Social Studies class or two.

Our first unit covers three areas that help to prepare students for the rest of the year - 1. Metacognition/brain/cognitive strategies 2. Worldviews and cultural frameworks 3. Political Spectrum and forms of Government. After this unit students will have a common vocabulary and understanding necessary to analyze and discuss historical events.

We will be doing more with philosophy and philosophers in this unit in terms of both lecture and classroom activities. Why don't you email a list of dates in September that are "good" for you and I will make arrangements for an observation time with the Office secretaries on one of the dates.

Thanks again!

I would love to "audit" your class! It's great that you are teaching these philosophical theories to our students. I have not had to discuss Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, etc. for years. I've enjoyed discussing these ideas and brushing off my Plato book.

Great job! Thanks!!
